St. Giles Hospital, Baltimore, Saturday Late Afternoon

'Nothing' looked a lot like the glaring white of an active cuckoo's eyes. Verity opened her eyes. The unrelenting whiteness didn't go away, although it did change forms, becoming the overhead lights which were shining directly down into her face. She groaned and tried to block the light with her arm, only to discover that the various tubes connected to her body made that impossible.

They didn't usually connect tubes to dead people. )

The Nest to Sarah's Hotel, Friday Night

After a dinner of lasagna - which, on their new night-shifted schedule was actually more of a lunch - Verity had come up to brood for a bit. Recognizing that her death stalked the streets of Baltimore in the guise of her third cousin had her looking at the future a little more closely. She'd came to Baltimore to prove that she could make it as a professional ballroom dancer. Only things hadn't exactly worked out that way. She hadn't managed to win a single major competition; the times she'd placed, it had always been local, and the prize money she'd received barely paid for the cost of her registration. It didn't touch her costumes, or the hours of studio time she had to beg, borrow, and steal whenever she could. Most people in her tier of the profession supplemented their income teaching classes, but she couldn't even do that anymore. Trying to be a bartender and a choreographer for Kitty and a cryptozoologist took up too much time. Quit bussing tables and she couldn't afford to eat. Quit taking care of cryptids… )

Seagirt Marine Terminal, The Port of Baltimore, Thurday Evening

The rooftop of the old Department of Docks building was slanted - something uncommon enough in Baltimore to be deeply disconcerting, especially when Verity was trying to stay out of sight. The angle of the roof was sharp enough that she couldn't lie flat, but shallow enough that she couldn't use it for cover. 'Avoid really obvious cover' was one of the rules she'd been raised with, entry number eight hundred and thirteen in the Gospel of Staying Alive. She sent up a silent apology to her entire family tree as she disregarded their advice and slunk into the shadow of the building's decorative clock tower. It was a short, mostly useless piece of masonry. It was sufficient for her current needs.

Once she was safely out of view, she settled into a crouch, and prepared to wait. )

Dave's Fish and Strips, Verity's Baltimore, Wednesday Evening

Fireworks for the Fourth lit up the night sky, but neither Verity nor Liam were in a mood to celebrate. "Well, this is going to be a whole lot of not fun," Verity sighed, standing outside of Dave's Fish and Strips, an unimposing building that was surprisingly hard to find unless you knew exactly where to look for it. It was a 'gentleman's club' that included live dancers who got down to absolutely nothing on the front stage. That didn't make it special; any city of size included at least a few of the same kinds of places. But Dave's was the only one that Verity knew of (in Baltimore anyway), that catered specifically to the cryptid set. Both the staff and the patrons were majority cryptid, if not exclusively so.

But hey, everybody had to make a living. In another life, Verity could easily see herself waitressing here. Just waitressing--she hadn't been kidding about her grandma's reaction. )

MHA #6 Tuesday Night

The apartment was silent when Verity unlocked the door and limped inside. The mice had either finished whatever religious ceremony they'd been practicing when she'd left or moved on to one of the quieter parts of the liturgy. Either way, they didn't come out to interrupt her as she dug her phone from her backpack and grabbed the first aid kit from the medicine cabinet, stripping out of most of her clothing and dropping them into the bathtub. She didn't think ahool blood was acidic, but why take chances?

Wearing only a long t-shirt and her underwear, Verity hobbled back out to the couch, )
